Committee Profile - Ged McCormick

What is your job? Farmer & Justice of the Peace

Current role at Field Days?

Life Governor, Committee Member and Livestock Committee Chair

Notable/favourite roles at the Field Days in the past:

I was the Static Display Chairman from 1981 until 1995, and then the Executive Officer for 15 years from 1994 until 2009. I really enjoyed both of these roles. The transition from purchasing and setting up the current site was a great learning experience.

As Executive officer it was interesting to learn about Work, Health and Safety and I enjoyed putting programs together. I also enjoyed learning to work with governing authorities rather then work against them for the benefit of all.

I was also apart of VASA for 30 years; the agriculture show society. It was good going to meetings twice a year, meeting and networking with similar people and addressing and solving mutual problems to our industry together.

Also being part of the sheep trials for the past 30 years and working as part of a small team has given much enjoyment. We’ve also had some great crop trials and I enjoyed working with chemical and seed companies.

How many years have you been on the committee / involved in the Field Days for?

I started parking cars in 1973 as a 17 year old and joined the committee just after that, so about 46 years.

Why did you join the Committee?

I was dragged along by George Holmberg and Don Palmer when I was 17 and my involvement grew from there. The first meeting I attended was in the fire station, nearly everyone smoked at the time and it was like looking through a smoke screen! We then moved on to the office in Cardwell Street, which was a small, thin office and we had to conduct meetings all seated along the wall.

What is your favourite part of the Field Days?

Meeting people from all over Australia and New Zealand and catching up with them yearly.  Some exhibitors and contractors have become firm friends today. I also enjoy working with the committee and staff.

How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

I enjoy going to the Football and Cricket in Elmore. I also enjoy tasting good reds!
